Mary is a daughter of Mary Ann Rowland of New Church, Glamorganshire, Wales and William Norris of London, England and Cardiff, Wales.

She married (1) Thomas Evans Sr. on 9 Mar 1854 at the Welch Baptist Church, Newport, Monmouth shire, Wales. He was twice a widower, having lost both his first wife and daughter and his second wife and her fourth child (a son) at childbirth.

Mary's children with Thomas are: Elizabeth Evans, Joseph Evans, Mary Ann Evans.

They, and Thomas's living children from his 2nd marriage, embarked upon the journey from Wales to America. They immigrated, along with other Latter-day Saints, including Tomas' widowed mother, Hannah, aboard the sailing vessel, The S. Curling, from Liverpool on 19 April into Boston Harbor on 23 May 1856.

Their perilous handcart trek with the 3rd Company of Captain Edward Bunker began just days after they had to bury their only son, little Joseph, in a lonely grave at the Pioneer Burial Ground outside of Iowa City, an encampment called Coralville.

They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley 2 October 1856. They reached the settlement of Kayscreek, which later became the communities of Layton and Kaysville. Thomas Sr. died a year later, in November. Mary was left with his elderly mother and five small children to care for.

Mary was married (2) to James Forbes, 21 Sep 1860, at Layton, Davis, Utah. He was a 34 year old divorced farmer from Scotland who had come to the Valley with his brothers and widowed father.

She and James raised her and Thomas' children and had five more of their own:

Their children are Catherine Forbes, Jane Forbes, Margaret Hannah Forbes, James Henry Forbes, and John William Forbes.
