Pierce J. Brooks-Holton
Pierce J. Brooks, 87, Holton, died Wednesday at his home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1893, at WaKeeney, the son of Chester C. and Cynthia Ann Mitchell Brooks. He lived in Cassadga, Fla., for 20 years before he moved to Holton many years ago.
Mr. Brooks was a Farm Bureau Insurance agent at Holton for 20 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War I and 50 year member of Mary L. Blair Post No. 44 of the American Legion at Holton.
He married Jessie Enola Scott in 1921. She died Nov. 27, 1958. He later married Mary M. Hagadorn in 1963. She died in 1980. A son Byron J. Brooks, died Oct. 4, 1962.
Survivors include a son, Norman R. Brooks, Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Bonnell, Winchester, and Mrs. Lorraine Cook, Meriden; a brother, John Brooks, Topeka; seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton. Burial will be in Denison Cemetery.
Uncle Pierce told me a story that was told to him by his mother. When they were moving from Trego County to Clay County, KS, they hung his cradle in the back of the covered wagon. When they stopped for the night, he was gone from the cradle. His dad went back over the trail by horseback and found him lying along the trail about 2 miles back. He was a little bruised but alive and unharmed.
