Mr. James Leo Shelton, age 93, of Winnfield passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Specialty Hospital of Winnfield surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Shelton was born on December 6, 1920 in the Sardis Community in Winn Parish. He was the son of the late James Monroe Shelton and the late Tamer Luther Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a graduate of Atlanta High School (1937), Northwestern State University (B.A. Degree 1942), and Loyola University School of Pharmacy in New Orleans, LA (1950). Mr. Shelton taught school and coached basketball and track at Atlanta High School, Winnfield High School and Winnfield Jr. High School for 20 years until his retirement from the Winn Parish School System in 1970. At that time, Mr. Shelton and his wife established Shelton's Pharmacy in Winnfield, which they owned and operated until 1981 when his son, Steve assumed ownership of the pharmacy.

Mr. Shelton was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Radio Mechanic from August 1942 until April 1946. He was a loving Christian husband, father, and grandfather who strongly believed that education is important and learning is a life-long process. He greatly influenced the lives of many people with his love and encouragement. Mr. Shelton was an active member of First Baptist Church of Winnfield for 68 years, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and on numerous church committees. Mr. Shelton loved the outdoors and was an avid deer and squirrel hunter. He also enjoyed raising fox hounds and competing in Field Trials throughout the south. He enjoyed all sports, especially Winnfield Tiger and LSU Tiger football. He rarely missed a game and he loved watching his grandchildren participate in all school activities. Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Sowers Shelton; his brother, Joseph Ralph Shelton; two sisters, Maybelle Shelton Haddox and Florence Shelton Collins; granddaughter, Hillary Lynn Shelton; and son-in-law, James Maxwell Kelley. Mr. Shelton is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Shelton and wife Gail, and Dr. Mark V. Shelton and wife Jennifer; and one daughter, Rebecca Shelton Kelley, all of Winnfield. Survivors also include seven grandchildren: Hannah Shelton Schneider and husband Pete of Covington, LA; Matthew Shelton of Natchitoches, LA; Andrew Shelton and wife Laurie of Pineville, LA; Dorothy Ann Shelton and John Shelton of Winnfield; Katie Kelley of New Orleans, LA; and Caroline Kelley of Winnfield. Mr. Shelton is also survived by his first great-grandchild, Clara Grace Schneider. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 09 at Southern Funeral Home, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Friday, January 10 from 8:00 AM until time of services.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 10, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Phelps, Rev. Stephen Laughlin, Rev. Danny Keyes and Rev. John Holland officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories, in Winnfield.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be Shelton Collins, James Lloyd Collins, Matthew Shelton, Andrew Shelton, John Shelton and Pete Schneider,
