Edward Raymond Anuta, 96, of Phoenix, formerly of West Lafayette, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, in Phoenix.
Born Aug. 29, 1909, in Pound, Wis., he was a 1928 graduate of Hammond High school and a 1933 graduate of Purdue University, where he studied to become a pharmaceutical chemist.
He married Geraldine Shriner on Oct. 21, 1933, in Chicago, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1995.
Mr. Anuta was employed as a chemist at Ansul Chemical Company in Marinette, Wis., at Badger Paper Mills Company in Peshtigo, Wis., and later worked for the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. He owned and operated two Anuta Drug Stores in Lafayette from 1943 until 1951 when he joined on as faculty in the chemistry department at Purdue University. He was in charge of chemistry laboratories and was an instructor until his retirement in 1973. He had also owned and managed Shriner-Anuta Farms in Monon from 1950 until 1969.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 724 in West Lafayette and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of Scottish Rite and West Lafayette Optimist Club and was a life member of the Lafayette and Phoenix Elks clubs. He participated in the People to People Tour of Agricultural Sites in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Surviving are three sons, Phillip Anuta of Vernon Hills, Ill., David Anuta (wife: Margaret) of Warsaw and Dr. Paul Anuta (wife: Dianna) of LaPlata, Md.; a daughter, Judith McFadden of Phoenix; and two sisters, Esther Bond and Inez Santry, both of Sun City, Ariz.
