Mary Ethel Byrne Russell, 89, of the Carmel Home, Owensboro, formerly of 6245 Griffith Station Road, Owensboro, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Henderson County, was a homemaker and was a housekeeper at Brescia College. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. She was a charter member of Newman Homemakers Club and was a Kentucky Colonel. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Sylvester Byrne in 1958 and Everett Russell in 1995.

Survivors include three sons, Louis A. Byrne and Stephen I. Byrne, both of Owensboro, and Martin P. Byrne of Poolesville, Md.; seven daughters, Sister Mary Ignatius, Stella Kaelin, Mildred Dockemeyer, Martha Pendleton and Marie T. McLeod, all of Owensboro, Lena Rose Medley of Louisville and Connie E. McKay of South Bend, Ind.; 33 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis Murphy and Joseph R. Murphy, both of Owensboro; and a sister, Agnes Alexander of Owensboro.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reed. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery in Reed. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis&Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either St. Augustine Building Fund, St. Peter of Alcantara Building Fund or the Carmel Home.
