History by her grandson Phillip Plotz, M.D.

Evelyn Gill Kilmer Plotz was born in Ruston, LA, to parents Micheal Baughman Gill Sr. (b: 19 Oct 1874, d: 28 Feb 1946) and Eva Edwina Morrow Gill (b: 16 Sep 1881, d: 16 Nov 1944). Her family was at one time one of the most prominent families in Ruston with her father owning much of the real estate and being involved in the oil business and farming. Her father's uncle Richard Monroe Gill was the mayor of Ruston from 1917-1920.

At the age of 16, Evelyn eloped with Milton J. Kilmer to Jonesboro, Jackson Parish, LA to marry. (Jackson Parish is the neighboring Parish to Lincoln Parish, of which Ruston is the parish seat.) Milton was from New York and 31 years her senior. On 17 Feb 1924, they told the court clerk that she was 19 in order to obtain a marriage license. Family information is that she felt a need to escape Ruston because she resisted the convention of young women being limited to the profession of teaching. And she likely was looking for adventure in a larger city than small-town Ruston. Milton must have seemed cosmopolitan and probably swept her off her feet. Unfortunately the marriage did not last and they were divorced in St. Louis on 12 Jan 1927.

Evelyn remained in St. Louis and went to business school for at least two years and found work as a stenographer in a law firm. A resourceful entrepreneur, at the age of 22, Evelyn acquired and managed an apartment building in St. Louis, MO on 4424 Forest Park Blvd. The building housed up to ten families. Devoted to her work, she spent long hours maintaining the building and taking care of her tenants.

On 10 Sep 1938, she married Rudolf Richard Plotz (b: 23 Oct 1904, Germany; d: 13 Jun 1965, St. Louis, MO.) in Union, Mo. They became the parents of Richard August Plotz (b: 19 May 1939) and Patricia Evelyn Plotz (b: 11 Nov 1941). Evelyn and Rudolf divorced on 29 Nov 1945 and she continued to manage her building alone while raising Richard and Evelyn.

Her building on 4424 Forest Park Blvd. no longer exists and the land now belongs to Washington University.

Property ownership and managment provided her enough financial security to travel back to Louisiana and help the Gill Family after a storm had destroyed the family home roof. Although she did not discuss it, she likely was fiancially supporting the Gills in Louisiana. Because of her financial success, she was able to send her children to private Lutheran schools in St. Louis.

An example of her devotion to her children is the story of how even after her stroke, she walked several blocks to the store to get her daughter some milk for her breakfast when she probably should have remained at home and let her caretaker do it. And because her daughter suffered from chronic ear infections, she took her to a specialist at Washington University which was walking distance to her house. Evelyn loved gardening and cultivated beautiful roses. Her son remembers that she would proudly send them with her children to their teachers at school.

Though she lived far away from her family of origin in Louisiana, she visited and they visited her. When her younger brother Ben visited her in St. Louis, it was written about in Ruston's newspaper The Ruston Daily Leader and it is likely that she paid for him to travel to St. Louis by train. She was the oldest sibling and was known affectionately by her five brothers as "Sister." At the untimely age of 45, she passed away of a stroke. Her funeral was attended by a large number of people from St. Louis, Chicago and Louisiana as she had many friends and loved ones. Her death was devastating to her children.

Her siblings were:

1. Micheal Baughman (M.B.) Gill, Jr. (b: 10 May 1910; d: Oct 1966 in Miami, FL)Spouse: Sylvia Isabel Guito. (b: 28 Mar 1918, Key West, FL; d: 20 Aug 2005 in Miami, FL)
