Obit. Leader-Telegram, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Thursday, December 19, 2013:
Lincoln LeRoy Merle Winger, 97, was welcomed into the arms of his Lord on December 16, 2013, from the VA Home in Chippewa Falls, WI. Lincoln was born August 31, 1916, in Eau Claire, WI. He developed his musical talents under the guidance of Samuel Bynum. Life was economically challenging to the Winger family and became more so as the country entered the Great Depression. Lincoln became a member of the CCC and participated in planting and logging trees in the Winter, WI, area. His father credited him with "keeping the family afloat" during those years. Returning to Eau Claire, he attended the Eau Claire Teachers College for 2 years. When the U.S. entered World War II, he tried to enlist in the military, but was rejected due to his poor eyesight. He married his sweetheart, Mary, and started a family. Then he was drafted into the Army. Despite his poor eyesight, he became the #1 marksman in his company, an achievement he was always proud of. Lincoln was involved in the second wave of the invasion at Normandy, France. His unit's objective was to clear the small towns of German resistance. On August 8, 1944, he was wounded in Vire, France, and woke up in a military field hospital. Recovering from his wounds, and later, pneumonia, he was honorably discharged. Lincoln moved his family to the Baraboo, WI, area and attended UW-Madison, earning degrees in Philosophy and Accounting, moved to Elk Mound, WI, in 1948, and started his career at NSP. He and Mary raised their 4 children there. Lincoln was active in his church, in Boy Scouts, in other civic groups, and was Elk Mound village clerk for several years, where he set up an efficient accounting system. Over the years, he lived in Bayfield, WI, and Eau Claire, and also in Tucson, AZ. He enjoyed hunting, hiking, camping, humor, pie, family, friends, deep discussions about philosophy, theology and history, and travelling, especially twice to Norway. He leaves us with memories of his wit, wisdom, humor, optimism, humbleness, and love. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was always there to help anyone, to lend an ear, a Kleenex or a toothpick. We miss you so much already, "Great-Grandpa Uncle Link, Dear." Until we meet again ... Thanks to friends and family who visited and called Lincoln in his final years, the VA Home staff, and special gratitude to Dr. Edstrom. He is survived by his children, Fred Winger, Christine (Dave) Abresch, Lena (Steve) Wright; wife, Margaret Bonnin Winger; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Further survived by special niece, Nancy Staves and family; and nephew, Dale Winger; as well as other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna K. Johnson Winger and Oscar A. Winger; siblings, Vernon, Wayne, Clarence Winger and Lois Winger Heffler; his wife, Mary Kramer Winger; dear sister-in-law, Annie Kramer; grandson, Gabriel Lincoln Leonard; and son, Rudy M. Winger. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave., Eau Claire. Visitation will begin two hours prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire.
