Obituary - Reuel Josiah Bawden 1924 ~ 2011

Reuel Josiah Bawden passed away on January 4, 2011 in Draper, Utah at the age of 86.

Reuel (known as R.J.) was born in Granger, Utah on June 2, 1924, to his parents Willard George Bawden and Annie Elizabeth Wallace Bawden.

He attended the Monroe Elementary School, then the Cyprus High School and the University of Utah, graduating with a B.S. degree in Business Education and Economics. R.J. received his mission call to the New England States Mission in 1946.

Upon returning to Salt Lake City, he used his business training by working under Thorpe B. Isaacson. Later he worked as financial secretary at the Winder Dairy.

R.J. was sealed to Marna LaVay Bailey on the 20th of June 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. Ten years later his family moved to California where he served as a State Farm agent for 28 years. During this time, he served as Bishop, Stake Executive Secretary and then 10 years as an ordinance worker in the Oakland Temple. In 1989 the Bawden family moved back to Utah, where he was called to serve in the South Africa Mission twice.

Upon returning home, he then served twice as a Stake Missionary along with his new wife, Norma Ruth Hammerstrom Bawden, whom he married on July 23, 1996.

R.J. had a hobby of building and repairing clocks. He built grandmother clocks and smaller wall or decorative clocks. He also enjoyed gardening, carpentry, singing, baseball, computers and spending time with his family.

Survived by his wife, Norma; children, R. Jay (Linda) Bawden; Laura Halverson; Kandice (Warren) McEntire; Natalie (Doug) Baker; Thomas (Marylee) Hammerstrom; Robin Boswell; Joan (Kim) Turner; Jan (Boyd) Wilkins; 41 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by parents; wife, Marna; grandson, Andrew Halverson; four sisters; two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Union Fort 5th Ward, 6770 S. 500 E. Friends may call at the church from 6-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2011 and one hour prior to the services. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park. www.goffmortuary.com
