Joseph and Marie were married March 20, 1902, near Cortland, Nebraska. In 1907, the Hansel family moved to the Gadsby area to farm and homestead. They had a family of five; an infant daughter passed away about 1906. Joseph helped build the church, and served on the Big Knife school board as trustee, and as councillor for Dublin municipality and the Village of Gadsby.
