FRED B. WHEELER Dies At Greenway
Fred Barker Wheeler, highly respected and life-long resident of Oneida County, passed away at the Wheeler Homestead in Greenway at 11:55 a.m. today. His death occurred in the same house in which his father and grandfather died.
Mr. Wheeler, who had been bedridden only a week, was born October 29, 1857, was the son of George and Hannah Barker Wheeler. His birth occurred on the farm that has been in possession of the Wheeler family since 1808, this historic family having come from Glastonbury, Conn., at that time.
On February 28, 1884, Mr. Wheeler married Carrie Howe, daughter of Charles and Sara Gray Howe. In 1934 Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their winter home in Orlando, Fla.
For many years, Mr. Wheeler, with his father, conducted the well-known Wheeler Stock Farm very successfully. Later he served as superintendent of the Rome branch of the U. S. Canners and still later became associated with the Fort Stanwix Canning Co, remaining with that concern 15 years.
He then owned and conducted a coal and feed business at Greenway Station until his retirement about 15 years ago.
Mr. Wheeler always took a keen interest in civic affairs and was appointed on the Rome Board of Assessors during the mayoral administrations of J. H. Carroll and Fred L. Martin.
For the past 15 years, Mr. Wheeler has been spending his winters at his home in Florida, returning in the spring to the family home for the summer.
Besides his widow he leaves four daughters, Mrs. W. F. Curtis, Orlando, Fla.; Mrs. A. F. Wesley, Mount Vernon, and Mrs. G. . Hendey and Mrs. E. S. Caddick, Rome; two grandchildren. Jack Wheeler Caddick, Ithaca, and Dorothy Hendey, Rome; and two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Howe, and Mrs. J. T. Howe. Rome. He attended the Presbyterian Church.
