Mary Ruth Clary Schrage

Mary Ruth Clary Schrage, age 79, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Sunday (November 3, 2002) at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

Mary Ruth was the oldest of four children born July 10, 1923 reared by Ralph and Lucille (Schubert) Clary in rural Knox City. They were raised on a farm, which was simply heaven to Mary Ruth. At an early age, she became accustomed to hard work. Most of the time she could be found working beside her father cutting firewood, feeding the cattle and hogs, mending fences and any other farm work that needed doing. Mary Ruth loved her younger siblings: Helen Jones of Monmouth, Illinois (now deceased), Lola Mae Snelling of rural Edina, and Denver Clary of Hurdland (now deceased).

On an early spring day in 1942, Mary Ruth bumped into a young man while walking down the street. That young man was so taken by her that he kissed her and called her his sweetheart, without even knowing who she was. On September 15, 1945, Lester Paul Schrage and Mary Ruth Clary were united in marriage in Vancouver, Washington. Mary Ruth worked in the shipyard as a bookkeeper during the day and at night she worked at an amusement park, "The Million Dollar Play House". After the war, Lester and Mary Ruth returned to Missouri and bought a farm east of Hurdland.

Lester and Mary Ruth began raising their family on the farm east of Hurdland. Their fortunes grew and so did their family. In all, they raised eleven children, ten sons and one daughter. Having such a large family, Lester began selling insurance in 1964. He spent most of his time out on the road trying to make a living for his family, which Mary Ruth worked at home. Mary Ruth worked a short while at the Edina Glove Factory. In 1965 she began raising dogs and did so until 1985 when they moved to Edina. Mary Ruth enjoyed caring for her dogs, building kennels, raising puppies, and getting many letters from all over the country from people who had bought her puppies. Mary Ruth loved her family and was always very interested in what they were doing. Later years had robbed her of some of her memories but she always had a friendly smile and outreached hands to those who came to visit her. Mary Ruth enjoyed going places together. She and Lester went on twenty-one insurance inventions conventions all over the country. More recently, Lester and Mary Ruth went on daily trips to eat out or simply take a ride. She will be greatly missed by many.

She is survived by a sister, Lola Mae Snelling of Edina; her husband, Lester Paul Schrage of Edina; and children Ronnie Schrage of Edina, Donnie Schrage of Edina, Leslie Schrage of Edina, Larry and Diane Schrage of Hurdland, Jerry Schrage of Edina, David Schrage of Edina, Judy Brown of Chatham, Illinois, Tim and Beth Schrage of Edina, and Tom Schrage also of Edina.

Grandchildren and step-grandchildren are Jeff Behrmann, Angela Anesi, Jeremy Schrage, Joani Schrage, Robert Schrage, Jenny Schrage, Terri Schrage, Michelle Schrage, Matthew Schrage, Jimmy Schrage, Joshua Brown, Jacqulyn Brown, Janae Brown, Jennifer Schrage, Jonathan Schrage, Brian Schrage, Brenna Schrage and Brandon Schrage.

Great grandchildren are Emily Schrage, Kyle Behrmann, Joe Behrmann and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday (November 6, 2002) at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. Reverend Robert Shobe will officiate the services. Carol Hayes, Emily Rumble and Margaret Mackey will provide music.
