The Huntsville Times, Huntsville, Alabama Sunday, January 1, 1967: Lavander Hillis, 89, of Owens Cross Roads, died Friday at his home after a long illness. A funeral will be today at 1:30 p.m. at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. G. N. Mitchell and the Rev. M. G. Mann officiating. Burial will be in Cochran Cemetery at New Market with Spry Funeral Home in charge. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Annie Priest of Douglasville, Ga.; three sons, Jim Hillis and Ernest Hillis of Owens Cross Roads and Wade Hillis of Farley; a brother, Squire Hillis of New Market; and 47 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Joe Hillis, James Priest, Clyde Hillis, Luther Holder, Roger Hillis, and Otis Hillis. The body will be at the home of Jim Hillis, Owens Cross Roads, until the time for the service.
