Josiah Moses Player (Moses J. Player in the 1880 census) moved from Harpers (now Andrews), SC, in October 1905.

In January 1906, he died at Ulmer, Allendale County, SC.

About ten years after his death, Saltkehatchie Baptist Church was built at Ulmer to replace an interim church which, since the Civil War, had served a congretation near the Great Salkehatchie River, the border between Allendale and Bamberg Counties.

By 1910, Josiah's widow had married his cousin Richard Wallace Player, who was logging in Great Salkehatchie Swamp.

Whether Josiah and Richard moved to the Salkhatchie together or whether Richard moved after Josiah's death is not known.

Two of Josiah's sons were buried in Saltkehatchie Baptist Church Cemetery, one in 1916 and another in 1918.

In this memorial Josiah's grave is placed in Great Saltkehatchie Cemetery pending further investigation and a request for a photograph of a tombstone.

DEATH OF MR. JOSIAH PLAYER

Ulmers, SC, Jan. 17, 1906.

Death has claimed another victim of our community, Mr. Josiah Player. He was born near Harper, SC, and was an honest, upright man, and was loved by all who knew him.

About three years ago his health began to fail, and on October 15, 1905, he moved from Harpers to Ulmers, hoping that his health would improve, but about the 25th of December he was taken with more serious symptons from which he never recovered. He was 40 years of age and leaves a wife and six children and a father, mother, two brothers and five sisters, and ahost of friends and relatives.

He is gone but not lost and we only part to meet again.

Contributor's note: Ulmers was a dreadful place to go for ones health. Hemorrhagic fever was rampant in Saltkehatchie Swamp.
