William was born in 1874, a son of the late Philip and Julia OTT Hoffmann. He married Irma Sarah Kreider, daughter of Onesimus and Alice Hackman Kreider of Springfield, OH on June 29, 1898 in Springfield. According to the 1900 US Census, William was living in Cincinnati with his wife and parents. His occupation is listed as machinist.

In July, 1905, their only child, John Frederick Hoffmann, was born in Springfield.

William died at his residence, 1600 Ninth Street South, St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida on July 12, 1945 at the age of 70. He came to Florida in 1939. He had retired as Superintendent of the Wadsworth Electrical Manufacturing Company in Covington, KY.

William was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Dayton, Ohio, Kishma Groto of Covington, and the First Avenue Methodist Church in St. Petersburg. He was survived by his wife, Irma; his son, John Frederick Hoffmann and wife Dorothy of Atlanta; his brother, Dr. John Adam Hoffmann, Dean at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati, OH, and his only grandchild, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann of Atlanta, GA.

Burial was in the Royal Palm South Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida.
