John was born in Springfield, Ohio on July 15, 1905 to the late William Frederick "W.F." and Irma Sarah Kreider Hoffmann. He attended schools in Springfield and college from which he graduated in 1926. During his college years, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He married Dorothy Ann Staughton Lynd, daughter of Elijah W. and Katharine Hickman Lynd, of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1927. He and his wife Dorothy were born on the same day of the same year. They agreed that this was a good omen for their life together.
John and Dorothy became the parents of one child, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann, born October 2, 1928, in Cincinnati. Later, they moved to Atlanta, GA, where John became a successful businessman, providing funeral cars, hearses, coffins, and other funeral-related products to a variety of funeral homes around the state of Georgia.
John was an antique car enthusiast, a Mason, and an avid coin collector. He also loved baseball and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He never failed to have Sunday lunch with them at their home in Stone Mountain. In his later years, he was required to have a portion of one of his legs removed, but that did not prevent John from enjoying life, taking part in family activities, and playing games with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa John."
His daughter Dorothy Ann Hoffmann Black and her husband Ian C. Black survived him, as did his four grandchildren, Gordon, Kathleen, Bruce, and Kenneth. Papa John was buried beside his beloved wife Dorothy in Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA on March 9, 1965.
In our Black family tree, Papa John is my husband's maternal grandfather.
