Local Man Drowns In False River
New Roads - Jimmy Ray Alexander, 23, of Lovett Rd., East Baton Rouge Parish, drowned last night while fishing in False River, the office of Sheriff S. A. Smith of Pointe Coupee Parish, reported.
His body was recovered about 7:25 this morning, by two members of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Flotilla, Commodore Ralph Gilpin and Erby Aucoin. The members of the flotilla joined the search about 4 a.m. today.
Dragging operations were started about 1 a.m. after the young man's family reported him as missing to the sheriff's office here. The dragging operations were supervised by Dep. Sheriff Harold Bonaventure and State Trooper James W. Major.
Dr. J. C. Roberts, Pointe Coupee coroner, received the body and decided no inquest was necessary. Alexander's parents told Dr. Roberts their son was subject to epileptic seizures. It was theorized that Alexander suffered an epileptic attack, fell into the water and drowned.
The family said Alexander went fishing alone about 6 p.m. yesterday and some 15 minutes later the empty boat was spotted drifting by Joe St. Romain, operator of Pop's Camp on the island side of False River who had rented the boat. He pulled the boat in and tied it up to the pier at his place. The parents did not become alarmed until about 11 p.m. and after talking with St. Romain and making a cursory search of the area notified the sheriff's office.
The body was recovered from about eight feet of water near Pop's Camp.
The body is at Welsh Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, pending completion of arrangements.
Surviving is his father, Colbert J. Alexander; mother, Mrs. Thelma Bernard Lovett; sister, Mrs. Betty Butler; half-sister, Mrs. Marsaline Cambre; half-brother, Butch Lovett, all of Baton Rouge.
