Thomas W. Hargett, 77, of Stockton, passed away on Jan. 18, 2012, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, surrounded by his family. Known to his family and friends as Tom or Tommy, he brought great joy to those around him.
Tom was born in Gaithersburg, Md., to John Abram and Blanche Mills Hargett. Tom proudly served his country in the Army for over 20 years, serving in Korea and Vietnam with valor. He was decorated for his courage and bravery in both conflicts. Tom would often recall how lucky he was to have seen so much of the world during his Army career, an experience he shared with his loving wife Taiko, who he met and married in Aomori, Japan, in 1955, and his four daughters. After retiring from the Army, he worked at Rough and Ready Island in Stockton, as a carpenter and later operated his own home remodeling and repair business. Caring and generous to his family and friends, he was always ready to lend his time and expertise to any project, no matter how large or small. Tom loved to BBQ and family gatherings at his home were times of great joy for him.
Tom is survived by, and will be sadly missed, by his beloved wife of 56 years, Taiko Hargett; daughters, Nancy Miller and her husband, Tom of San Diego; Lillian Anderson of Stockton; Christine Martinelli and her husband, Tim of Fairfield; and Joanna Hargett of Stockton; one brother, John Hargett and his wife Mary, of Monrovia, Md.; three sisters, Martha Briggs of Gaithersburg, Md.; Esther King and her husband, Earl, of Dillsburg, Pa.; Shirley Kitzmiller and her husband, David, of Gaithersburg, Md.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Lucille Hargett and Mary Crown; and one brother, Charles Hargett.
Services will be held at a later date at Sacramento Valley National Cemetary. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.
