Vivian was born in Altoona, PA. She lived there for awhile and then moved to the Williamsburg, PA area.. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1942 at the age of 16. After graduation she went to work for Rheem Mfg Co in Maryland As a result of WWII she enlisted into the Navy, becoming a Navy WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, a reserve unit created by President Roosevelt for the purpose of giving women a chance to serve during WWII. Vivian served at the US Navy Fleet Post Office in San Francisco, CA

During the time she was a Naval WAVE she also served as the first female US Mail carrier in Williamsburg, PA.

After marrying her husband she became primarily a homemaker, taking care of her growing family's needs. They couple took up residence in a house, located on Academy Alley, Williamsburg, PA--it was the home of her husband's grandmother, Olive Edwards Farringer.

The family subsequently outgrew the house and moved to a new home located on East Second Street, Williamsburg, PA. When her husband obtained a new job in Lewisburg, PA, she, along with her family, moved to that city.

She later became a member of the Watsontown Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, serving as teacher, Sunday School secretary, youth director and cradle roll superintendent. She also served as a bus driver for a local Christian Academy.
