Son of Lt. Gov. John Watts and Ann Delancey, he married Lady Mary Alexander, daughter of Maj. Gen. William Alexander, Lord Sirling and Sarah Van Brugh Livingston, in 1765. Between them they had Nine children;

A wealthy merchant of New York city, with his brothers, he would go on to manage the estates abandoned by his father when he was forced to flee the city due to his loyalties. In 1760, at the age of 17, he graduated Kings College (now Columbia University). As early as 1768 he was a member of the committee which founded the New York Chamber of Commerce. In 1788 he succeeded his father as a trustee of the New York Society Library and served until 1791.
