Raymond was the fourth child of six, born to Leonard George and Flora Blanche Henderson. He grew up as a son of a minister in the area of Lamoni, IA and Lone Rock, Harrison County, Missouri. Raymond's siblings were Easter Irene, Erlain Marg, Grace, Vivian Erletta, and Robert V. Holloway.

Raymond went to college at Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa.

On August 3, 1945, Raymond married Jeanette Aletha Sherbondy in Compton, California. They became the parents of two children: James Leonard and Rowena June.

Jeanette passed away on March 19, 2003, in Independence, Missouri. Raymond married again on April 20, 2004, in Independence, Missouri, to Phyllis Huffman.

One of Raymond's special interests included bike riding. He rode 6 or 7 years in R.A.G.B.R.A.I. The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa is a week-long event requiring proper training, physical fitness, and a desire to have fun while enjoying the ride with 10,00-20,000 bike riders.
