Daughter of James H. and Martha Ellen (Derflinger) Derflinger. Martha was James' 2nd wife. They were married Oct. 17, 1868 in Warren County, VA. His mother was born a Derflinger so it is not an error that I show her maiden name in parenthesis as such.

Luvina's paternal grandparents are William & Eliza Ann (Martin) Derflinger and her maternal grandparents are Charles W. and Catherine Anne (Veach) Derflinger. It is possible that Luvina's parents are related in some way, most likely cousins, but I have not been able to make such a distinction in my research.

Luvina was born and raised in Warren County, Virginia. Outside of that, not much of her life prior to marriage is known.

Marriage: John Elijah Alger
Date: 23 Dec 1898
Location: Warren County, VA
Outcome: Deceased
4 Surviving Children (of at least 8):
i. Harry M. Alger
ii. Ella May Alger
iii. Ola Elizabeth Alger
iv. John Russell Alger

** In the 1900 Census, while in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Luvina reports that of 3 children she bore, none survive. In the 1910 Census, in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, she reports that she bore 7 children with 3 surviving (yet only two live in the home). I did locate the burial site of a set of twins in Monongahela, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Cemetery records show only that they were "Twins of J.E. Alger"... No dates, no genders, no names given. I do not know if they passed before, after or in 1900, nor do I know if they were stillborn. and the cemetery had no further information on them. Her 4th and final surviving child, John Russell, was born 2 years later. It is possible that she lost more than 4 children just to have the 4 that did survive. **

Though I can not prove with 100% certainty that this family's composition and relation status is as I display it to be, I can say that the circumstantial evidence weighs very heavily in favor of the accuracy of these stated familial connections.
