Norman Carlson, age 85, of Warroad and formerly of Northwest Angle, passed away on April 6, 2006 at the Roseau Area Hospital.

Norman was born on June 8, 1920 in Winger, MN to Gunda (Uggen) and Fritz Carlson. He moved with his family to the Northwest Angle in 1925 and attended school there, and later graduated from MacIntosh High School in 1937.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from May of 1942 to November of 1945, as a Master Sergeant.

He and Pauline (Sjol) were married on December 22, 1945. They continued to live at the Northwest Angle, where Norman operated a logging business. He later started the Northwest Angle Resort. He operated that until his retirement in 1979, when he moved to Warroad.

He and Mertrice (Wick) were married in 1974. Norman was one of the "pioneers" of the Northwest Angle. He devoted many years to improving the living conditions the whole community, including building the current airstrip. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, flying and prospecting when he was younger. He was a general "outdoorsman" who enjoyed his work at the Angle, which continued even in his retirement. He spent many years traveling south in the winter, including Florida, Texas, and the last many years in Mesa, Arizona.

He was a strong spiritual leader both in his family and the communities in which he lived. He was also a member of the Roseau-Warroad-Baudette Gideon's Camp.

He is survived by his wife, Mertice of Warroad; children, Carolyn (Gary) Lockner of Baudette, MN, JoAnn (Don) Ellenson of Warroad, MN, Rebecca (Tom) Smith of Iron, MN, Roberta (David) Ochis of Eveleth, MN, Ilyne (Mike) Rasmussen of Angle Inlet, MN, and Robert (Mary) Carlson of Angle Inlet, MN; 31 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-laws, Millie Carlson and Beth Carlson both of Angle Inlet; sisters, Irene (Harold) Peterson of Angle Inlet and Myrtle Thompson of Bemidji; and brother, William (Lorraine) Carlson of Watertown, SD; step-children, Allan (Naomi) Zak of Thief River Falls, Dan Zak of Middle River, Brian (Debra) Zak of Carver, MN, Sherry Zak of Mesa, AZ and LeAnn (Howard) Kay of Highland Beach, FL; 11 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; brothers, Kenneth, Maynard and Glen; sister, Beatrice; sons, Dan and Richard; grandchildren, Jack and Michaela; and a great-grandson, Bryce.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 11th at 10 AM at the Roseau Community Church in Roseau. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 6-8 PM with a 6:30 prayer service at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau.
