Mertrice Annabelle Carlson, age 81 of Highland Beach, FL, and formerly of Roseau, Warroad, Northwest Angle, MN and Mesa, AZ passed away on Apr 18, 2011 at the Boca Regional Hospital in Florida comforted by her family.
Mertrice was born on Mar 9, 1930 in Roseau, MN to Theodore and Minnie (Paulson) Wick of Pinecreek, MN where she attended a one-room schoolhouse. She married Richard Zak and moved to Strathcona, MN and had 5 children. They were together for 20 years until Mertrice divorced and moved to Montana for a few years before returning to Roseau, MN to marry Norman Carlson. Mertrice and Norman owned a family-run resort at the Northwest Angle and were married 33 years. Mertrice was a fabulous baker and widely known for her homemade breads, pies, cakes and Scandinavian specialties. She also loved creating beautiful flower gardens, dancing and music, but her first love was her family whom she had an undying devotion. She was the most altruistic, selfless and nurturing mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and friend and although she will be greatly missed, she lives on in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her children, Alan (Naomi) Zak of Thief River Falls, Brian (Debi) Zak of Chaska, MN, Sherry Zak of Mesa, AZ, LeAnn (Howard) Kay of Highland Beach, FL and her grandchildren. Mertrice is also survived by her brother Maynard (Loretta) Wick of Aurora, MN and sister, Wilma Bell of Laurens, SC. She also has 6 stepchildren and well over 100 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Carlson; son, Danny Zak; brothers, Thor, Russel and Emery Wick, and 2 stepsons, Danny and Richard Carlson.
