Samuel was a carpenter by trade and a Durand businessman. When he was 19 or 21, he moved to Pepin County from Pennsylvania with George Ecklor, age 52 or 54, with whom he stayed for about five years (obituary of SJ Wakefield 12/27/1901). He married Mary Jane Miller on October 27, 1857 at Pepin Co., WI by Rev. Timothy M. Lyman, a minister of the Gospel of the Congregational denomination. (MJ Wakefield v. SJ Wakefield, 1885.)
He was divorced from Mary Jane Miller on April 23, 1890. Samuel tried to get custody of the girls, but the Pepin County Circuit Court ordered that they were old enough to take care of themselves (Frances was 18; Hattie was 16; and Clara was 13)! (Hattie Kistner v. Clarence Wakefield, 1897.)
Samuel married Sarah Jane (Wood) Adsit on 12/06/1896 in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Although Samuel was remarried to Sarah at the time of his death, he is buried beside his former wife, Mary Jane Wakefield.
