A daughter of pioneers Samuel Jackson Wakefield and Mary Jane Miller, Hattie was born on her parents' farm and lived there until sometime after her parents divorced in 1890. She was 18 years old when she married John Marcus Kistner, a 40-year-old widower with four small children, by whom she would have six more children. John died in 1903.
Hattie married Christ Harley on May 22, 1919 at Dunn County, WI. She was 43 years old when they married, and he was 81 (although Dunn Co. court records, Volume 10, Page 117, state that he was age 78).
