The following bio was provided by his 1/2 sister:

Walter Franklin Lafferty was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico on 14 April 1914. He later changed his middle name to Herbert. He grew up 20 miles north of Roswell New Mexico where his father had a ranch. His father had left with a large cattle herd to Chihuahua (Mexico) to graze them there and had a 2 year contract. In 1924 his dad returned to get the family and took them to Chihuahua where they stayed for 3 months then Mettie took her children and returned to the USA. After his parents separated and his mother Jamettie took the children to raise by her self all the children worked.

As a youngster he worked three jobs putting himself through High School and helping support his mother and younger brothers. He worked at the Pharmacy in Alamogordo, New Mexico. There, as an apprentice, he became a pharmacist. He eventually bought out the Pharmacy. During a time when the town boomed he owned 4 drug stores and several rental houses.

He served as Councilman and then Mayor of Alamogordo for two terms. He was primarily responsible for the care of his mother, who lived in the same town.

After the war, when the military base wound down, the period of prosperity for the town passed. Walter found himself in a financial bind. As the money situation decreased due to the closing of the Military base close by Walter was disturbed about this situation and took night drives. He was at killed at night in a car accident. He hit head on with a pick up truck on the same road, six miles from where his brother Johnnie died.

His widow married Paul, the man who had been Walter's partner in the Pharmacy.

When hearing of Walter's death the Mayor Charles Sutton said, "I don't know when I've been so shocked or so stunned by news, as I was this morning. I've known Walter practically all of his life. He use to come out to my house as a kid, when he was in school here. And more than that, he was one of the finest commissioners a fellow could serve with. Walter had ideas of his own. He was the kind of man who would give city matters deep study and then vote his convictions. He gave lots of time to the city, far more than most citizens realize. The death of Walter Lafferty is a tragedy Alamogordo will not soon forget. We need more citizens of his caliber who are willing to give their time to civic duties as he did."
