John was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Swick) Nelson, on April 13, 2007; an infant daughter, Wilda Naomi Nelson, and an infant son, Dennis Marvin Nelson; three sisters, Bertha Stonaker, Janie Ours and Bessie Nelson; and four brothers, Ray, Jesse, Homer and Ross Nelson.
John was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
John served in the United States Army in the MARS Task Force in the Pacific Campaign during World War II.
John was the father of three daughters, Beverly, Rita and Shelia.
