Co H 6th TN Cav

He was in a Union regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, unit and company correct as noted. He enlisted 18 Sep 1861 in Bethel in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Contributor: Christopher Banks (48480225)

Nicholas Pitts, abt 1835- ?: He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, Sixth Tennessee (U.S.) Cavalry which was commanded by Col. Fielding Hurst. He joined on September 18, 1862 and was discharged by special order no. 278 of the War Department AGO on August 23, 1864. Nicholas did not see much action, he spent most of the war in sick bay. This unit fought all over West Tennessee during the war and actually ended up with a bad reputation. One of the stories that they are credited with is that they occupied Jackson, TN and charged a ransom. The ransom was paid but as they left town they set the downtown area on fire. Since Nicholas was a 2nd Lt. (not high in the chain of command) I am sure that he had nothing to do with this episode. A good source for this unit is Hurst's Wurst by Kevin D. McCann. Nicholas is listed in the unit roster in the back of this publication.
