John Calvin Pitts, 1841-1923: Was "drafted" by the Confederacy but while on furlough, he ran away and joined up with the Union army. He was in Company B, 46th Ohio Infantry. This regiment was in Sherman's brigade at the beginning of the war and he fought under Sherman though out the conflict. He joined in Savannah, TN on March 11, 1862. He fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga (he was part of the attack on Tunnel Hill on the end of Missionary Ridge, and he fought through the Atlanta campaign. During the march to Savannah he was shot (on November 28, 1864) in the mouth by friendly fire. He ended up losing 17 teeth and spent the remainder of the war in various hospitals until he was finally discharged in Ohio at Camp Dennison on May 26, 1865. At this time he came back to TN until his death near Finger, TN in 1923. There are numerous documents from his pension records during the war plus a number of books and articles describing the exploits of Sherman and his men during the war. It is said by family members that John did see quite a bit of action while in the military.
