Samuel Stevens is believed to be the son of William Stevens and Lavinia "Viney" Whittington (seek valid proof). He married Margaret Larrimore at unknown date. He died in between the 1840 - 1850 census or in about "1845" (seek sources). Daughter Rachel Elizabeth Phibbons 1928 death certificate (posted on her site) lists her parents, Samuel Stevens and Margaret Larrimore (or Lerremore). Other Larrimores married into the Stevens family (John Stevens to Fanny and Joseph R Stevens to Ellen C.L.).

According to old family records, Samuel had Stevens siblings (order unknown):
William (unknown),
John "W" Stevens 1782? - 1848, his wife was Fanny Larrimore Stevens 1798 -1875, #34472548
Joseph Stevens
Rachel Ann Stevens 1799 - bef 1860 (Samuel Wood, Sr.) #81598516
Francis Stevens 1805 - 1877 (Sarah Collinson) #29330450
Mary Eleanor "Ellen" Stevens Larrimore 1806 - 1882 (James Larrimore)
Susan Stevens abt 1806 - 1873 (Billy Wood & Lewis Tinges) #88978530

Samuel Stevens owned a burial plot at Mount Harmony, but it is yet unknown who is buried here in his unmarked plot. It's suspected by the cemetery records keeper that it was Samuel himself, without a marker. (MP)

1790 to 1840 census comparisons:
In 1790, Stevens were in the county of Talbot, Baltimore, Dorchester, etc.
In 1800, 5 Stevens households were in Anne Arundel Co., none in Calvert Co.
In 1810, 9 Stevens households were in Anne Arundel Co., none in Calvert Co.
In 1820, 5 Stevens households were in Anne Arundel Co., none in Calvert Co.
In 1830, 4 Stevens households first appear in Calvert Co., Wm the eldest, 70-79, Samuel, 50-59 and John & Richard, both 40-49. (3 Stevens in Anne Arundel Co.)
In 1840, 4 Stevens households were in Calvert Co., 0 in Anne Arundel. (Used Ancestry through Heritage Quest) Note: the county line between Calvert and Anne Arundel Counties moved twice.

According to a War of 1812 pension file, Samuel Connolly, #SO (or Q) 15506 served in "Capt. Samuel Stevens Co., Md Militia." This could be the same man.

1827, The Calvert County Chancery case for the late Thomas Turner (died 1826) left his 3 minor Turner children, Mary Ann, Ann and Richard to guardian Samuel Stevens. Thomas Turner was the son of William Turner and Elizabeth Whittington and grandson of Francis Whittington (see photo with Samuel Steven's signature).

On the 1830 Calvert Co., MD census, I found Saml Stevens with Free White Males, 2 under 5; 2 10-14; 1 15-19 and 1 "50-60" (Samuel, born between 1770 - 1780); Free White Females: 1 20-29 and 1 30-39. The first names of the hard to read census are not all legible so I'm dependent on Ancestry's transcription but I can see he lived between a Wood and another Stevens homestead. Sadly, he was the same age in the following 1840 census, but due to the ages of young children, I suspect he was 10 years younger here or 40-50 instead.

On the 1840 Calvert Co., MD census, I found Samuel Stevens with Free White Males: 2 5-9 years; 2 10-14; 1 "50-59" (Samuel); Free White Females: 2 under 5; 1 5-9; 1 30-39; employed in agriculture: 4, total 9. Based on his last known census, he was born between 1781 and 1790 or approximately 1786. Hm T Hardesty, Gustavus Wood, Wm Wood, James Whittington, Richd L Griffin, etc.

Samuel, the elder, above, is not on the 1850 nor later Calvert Co., MD censuses. It is believed he died between 1840 and 1850.

Samuel has other family buried here also.

On the 1850 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found (his now widowed wife) "pauper" Margaret Stevens, age 46 with Margaret Stevens, 9; Rachel Stevens, 6 and farmer John Strickland, 22, all MD born (relationships are not given on the 1850 census).

His son John was on the 1850 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census. I found John T Stevens, 40 and Sarah Stevens, 30; Samuel Stevens, 11; Wm Stevens, 9, and Phillip Stevens, 7, all MD born.

Note: Margaret is NOT on the 1860 Georgetown Ward 2, Washington, D.C. census. Instead that's Margaret Chambers Stevens, Mrs. Rezin Stevens.

Samuel and Margaret had Stevens children, born in MD (believed by family):
William F, Sep 1827 (Mary Ellen Hardesty), below
John T, 1829 - abt 1870 (Sarah A Cox), below
James S, 1832 - ?
Margaret, abt 1841 (Henry L. Whittington)
Rachel Elizabeth, 19 Feb 1845 (Robt Plummer Phibbons), below

Was this the same Samuel or other relations? On 10 Dec 1811, SAMUEL Stevens, Samuel Wood, 2 of the subscribing witnesses to the within last will and testament of Morgan Wood, late of Anne Arundel Co., deceased, made oath to God and the registrar, that they heard and saw Morgan publish, pronounce and declare his will and signed it with a mark. "…And that they together WILLIAM Stevens, Junr, the other subscribing witness respectively subscribed their names as witnesses, in the presence and at the request of the Testator and all in the presence of each other." Sworn before John Gafsoway Registrar Wills A.A. Coty. The 20 Feb 1805 made will (that they witnessed) was recorded in Anne Arundel Co., MD Will Book Vol. #37, page # not legible.
