MADISON, NC ~ Lawrence G. "L.G." Bennett, 75, went home to be with Jesus Sunday morning, September 15, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

A 1:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Ray Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mark Talbert officiating. Interment will follow in Grace Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rockingham County Honor Guard.

L.G. was born in Stokes County, June 8, 1938, the son of Posie and Lera Mabe Bennett.

He was a faithful member and deacon of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was a 1956 graduate of Lawsonville High School and attended Rockingham Community College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Midway and was honorably discharged in 1982. L.G. retired from Piedmont Airlines with over 37 years of service; was a member of the Pine Hall Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department and the Pine Hall Ruritan Club. On May 12, 1961, he married the love of his life and best friend, Juanita Lankford Bennett.

In addition to his parents, L.G. was preceded in death by his daughter, Terri Lynn Bennett; brother, Elmer Bennett; mother and father-in-law, Grady and Ellen Carroll Lankford; brothers-in-law, June Cardwell and Junior Duncan.

L.G. had a great love for aviation, baseball and flying. He was an avid Atlanta Braves Fan and influenced the lives of countless young men coaching Little League Baseball in the Pine Hall community. Some of the greatest moments and joys of his life were spent participating in the activities of his children and grandchildren.

L.G. is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Juanita Lankford Bennett of the home; two children, Tonya B. James and husband, Bill and Tony G. Bennett both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Scott James of Raleigh, Payton James of Asheville, Drew James, Morgan Bennett and Micah Bennett, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Virginia Cardwell of Mayodan, Glenda Duncan and Betty Briggs and husband, James, both of Danbury; three brothers, Mack Bennett and wife, Cathy of Germanton, Wayne Bennett and wife, Jo Ann of Lawsonville and Junior Bennett and wife, Debbie of Danbury, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Ray Funeral Home and other times at the family home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Cornerstone Baptist Church, 2061 Lindsey Bridge Road, Madison, NC 27025.
