Born June 22, 1926, in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Jonas Partee Austin, Sr. and Oma Hall Austin. A member of Shiloh Lutheran Church, she spent most of her career working in textiles. Wilma was a very caring person who loved to cook and entertain her family, friends, and neighbors.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Almon Cochran; two sons, Steven Cochran and his infant twin; six brothers, Willard, McCoy, Arthur, Garland, Gerald and Roy Austin; and four sisters, Eula Bowman, Irene Starnes, Louella Bowman, and Kay Nell Austin.
She is survived by three brothers, Clarence Austin and wife Willene of Hickory, J.P. Austin Jr. and wife Clara Jean of Taylorsville, and Gary Austin and wife Nancy of Hudson; two sisters, Sylvia Hefner and husband Bill of Taylorsville, and Brenda Cooke and husband James of Bethlehem; two sister-in-laws, Wilma Austin and Stella Austin, both of Hickory; "adopted" grandchildren, Caylee and Tyler Maltba of Hickory; and a large number of nieces and nephews, including Karen Banghart, who was like a daughter to her.
The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Shiloh Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dave Hefner officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
