John Simmons
John Simmons, 78, after a short illness died last Saturday February 9th at his home on South Spruce Street. His wife Sarah Simmons, proceeded him to the grave by several years. He leaves one brother Saul Simmons of Deerfield and one sister, Mrs. Lina Beverage of Pocahontas county, West Va. and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The deceased spent his entire life in and around Monterey, and was an energetic and industrious citizen. Funeral services were held at the Monterey Methodist Church Sunday at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. P. Foley, assisted by Dr. T. M. Swann. Interment took place in the Monterey cemetery.

The house and lot on Town Hill of John Simmons, deceased, was sold at public auction Saturday, to Charles Waybright, Monterey, for $1,210.

John Simmons, whose home is on Trimble Hill, while working with the road force south of town last Friday was caught by a sliding gravel bank while loading a wagon and almost buried. When gotten out of it, was found that one of his ankle bones was broken. He is a man past middle age, which will naturally prolong his stay with the shut-ins
