August Hein married Wilhemina Wolfgramm on April 22, 1870 in Germany and had sons Herman, August, Wilhelm and Albert in Germany. (During this time frame, they also had daughter Emilie - born and died in 1875 in Germany.) Family tradition states that August was a musician in his home country.
August and Wilhelmina Hein and their sons immigrated to the United States on the Habsburg leaving departure port of Bremen, Germany and arriving at the port of New York on April 19, 1881. (During this same trip, some of Wilhelmina's family also immigrated to the USA.)
After arrival in New York, August and family went to Hiawatha, Kansas. (It is said his brother Will lived in that area). Son Frank was born while in Hiawatha and then the family re-located to Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, August and Wilhelmina had two other daughters -- Frances and Claire.
Wilhelmina died in April 1888 in Chicago, IL.
August met Johanna Mohr after her immigration from Germany in May 1888. The couple married on September 29, 1888 in Chicago, IL.
While in Chicago, August and Johanna had Rose, Robert, and Mabel. About 1895, August, Johanna and their family moved from Chicago to Wisconsin -- originally living in Wonewoc, WI.
The 1900 census shows the family living in Wonewoc, Juneau, Wisconsin. The family consisted of August, Johanna, son Frank, daughter Frances, daughter Lizzie (Johanna's daughter from her first marriage), daughter Rose, son Robert, daughter Mabel, daughter Hattie, son Henry, and daughter Eva. The 1900 census also shows August's occupation as farmer.
Ultimately, August, Johanna and family settled in Sauk County, WI where they added four more children to their brood.
Some sources show that August worked as a zookeeper at Ringlingville in Baraboo, Sauk Co., WI. Ringlingville was founded in 1884 and served as the wintering quarters for Ringling Circus.
August died March 25, 1904, about a year and one-half after Johanna died. It has been said that August "died from a broken heart."
Sometime between the time of Johanna's death and his own, August made arrangements for his two youngest daughters to live with specific families -- Eva to go with the Peters family, and Marie to go with the Ripke family.
