He was born in Exline, Iowa on Feb. 7, 1890, a son of William F., and Ella Stansberry Davis. The family moved to Milan. MO. where he grew up. He attended Gem City Business College in Quincy. He married Miss Veta L. Mathew of Petersburg on Oct. 20, 1915, and they lived for a number of years on a farm north of Petersburg. In 1927 he left the farm and came to Petersburg where he engaged in the implement business for several years. Later he became manager of the Tallula Farmers Elevator; and when the late T. J. Raikes was elected sheriff shortly before his death, Mr. Davis became chief deputy, and upon Mr. Raikes death, served out the remainder of that year as Sheriff.
He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church and was active in civic affairs, serving on the board of Education for seven years and on the City Council for two years.
Survivng are his wife, Veta; one son, Dr. William W. Davis of Quincy; three grandchildren, Susan, Lee and Mark Davis; and one sister, Miss Gertrude Davis of Evanston.
The body was taken to the Thompson-Harms and Hurley Funeral Home, and services were held at the Central Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Hayward McCollough of the Central Presbyterian Church and Rev. Joe A. Driskill of the First Christian Church. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
