Obituary

In the death of John A. Phillips, which took place at the resident of his son last Sunday, this city loses a very aged and respected citizen.

Deceased was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, May 31, 1807, consequently lacked but three months and 16 days of being 90 years of age. In 1831 he was married in Indiana to Laura Niles, who died in Blair Aug. 27, 1894, aged 83 years. Both were members of the Baptist church for 60 years. Have lived in this county since 1868. Their family consisted of seven boys and four girls. Two sons live in this city and two in Oregon—all the others are dead.

Funeral was from the residence of S.B Phillips on Tuesday afternoon and sermon by Rev. Hull and there was a large attendance of sympathetic friends.

John A. Phillips died last Sunday, March 14, 1897, at the residence of his son, Steve Phillips. Rev. J. Hull conducted the funeral services from the house on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Phillips was born in Harlan Co., Ky., May 31, 1807 and had he lived to that date this year he would have been 90 years old. From Kentucky he went to Indiana where he was married to Miss Laura Niles, from which union came eleven children. Steve and Herb of this city and John and Perry of the state of Oregon are the only surviving ones. Mr. Phillips was a resident of Nebraska about 81 years.
