Sarver Man Stricken, Dies In Natrona
Involved in a minor accident in Natrona on Friday afternoon while en route to a doctor's office, a 61-year-old retired mine employee left his automobile, engaged in a discussion with the driver of the other car, and suddenly collapsed with a heart condition.
The patient, James Arther Burd, of Route 1, Sarver, was rushed to Allegheny Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at 1:15 p. m.
The coroner's report ascribed death to a valvular heart disease.
Mr. Burd was in the rear seat of his car, with a daughter driving and his wife in the front seat, as they proceeded down Vine street, Natrona, toward a doctor's office. The car stopped at Philadelphia street crossing, while a train passed, and then turned left toward the crossing.
From the opposite side of the same street — known as Argonne Drive rather than Vine street — a car driven by M. G. Morris, superintendent of the Harrison township schools, started to turn right into the same crossing. Fenders of the Burd and Morris machines collided. Drivers and passengers got out of the autos and discussed the matter.
As they talked, Mr. Burd said, "I'm so sick," clutched his heart and collapsed.
Mr. Burd retired eight months ago from Butler Junction mine, following a service record of 20 years. He had been slightly ill for the last seven months, and was on his way to see a Natrona doctor when the accident and resultant shock occurred.
Born in Natrona on April 4 [May 5 on Death Cert], 1881, he had lived in the Natrona and Natrona Heights disctrict all his life. His residence was in Buffalo township, Butler county, near Saxonburg road and Route 908.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frone W. Burd, and nine children, William, Agnes, Virginia, Kenneth and Robert, all at home; Mrs. Hazel Koedel, Route 908, R. D., Tarentum; Mrs. Elsie Wylie, Vandergrift Airport road; Mrs. Ellen Wylie, Gosser Hill, Leechburg, and Mrs. Katherine Bicker, Silverville, Butler county. He also leaves seven grandchildren.
Services were held in the family home off Saxonburg road and Route 908, this afternoon at 2, with Rev. Bruce R. Shaffer of Trinity Lutheran Church, Freeport, in charge. Interment was followed in Mt. Airy cemetery.
