On October 21, 1939, Ruth was united in marriage to Gerald Lane at Council Bluffs, and he died December 14, 1989. Following their marriage they made their home in Cedar, then in 1957 moved to Lacey, and in 1962 moved to Wellman, Iowa. In 1972 they moved to Iowa City where Ruth worked at the University of Iowa. She worked at the University in various capacities and retired from there in 1983 after 18 years of service. In 1992, she moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to family.
Ruth enjoyed caring for her family, and especially loved cooking and baking. She delighted in cooking for many friends and family over the years, and also enjoyed playing cards and scrabble, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan.
Her family includes two sons and their wives: Bud and Marilyn Lane of Cedar, and Gary and Sheri Lane of Homestead; two daughters: Janice (& Marvin) Dittman of Sycamore, Illinois, and Jo Lane of Coralville; 9 grandchildren: Brad Lane, Kathi Schelker, Stacie Lane, Brian (& Julie) Dittman, Steven Dittman, Stephanie (& Tom) Kuennen, Angie (& Scott) Kesselring, Kris (& Bret) Albrecht, and Greg Lenz; 13 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: brother, Joe (& Gini) Barnard in Florida, sister, Pat DeWitt of Oskaloosa, sister, Bonnie (& Warren) Smith in Idaho, and brother, Jack (& Elaine) Barnard of Oskaloosa; two sisters in law: Doris Barnard in Missouri, and Alice Barnard of Oskaloosa.
Besides her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers: Jay, Rex, and Bill Barnard.
Funeral services for Ruth Lane will be held Friday, February 8, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dan Ridenour officiating. The committal service will be held Friday at Memory Garden Cemetery Mausoleum in Iowa City. Visitation will begin Thursday after 11 a.m. and the family will be at the funeral chapel Thursday p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice for a future hospice house.
