Obituary:
Mr. Jasper Bernard "Bernie" Barnard, 79 of Blythe Island, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at his residence following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Patterson, Georgia on November 18, 1933, he had lived in Hinesville for many years before moving to Brunswick 18 years ago. Mr. Barnard was a 1952 graduate of Patterson High School and went on to further his education by graduating from the Georgia Teacher's College (now Georgia Southern University) in 1956. Following his college graduation, Mr. Barnard went on to enlist in the US Army where he served at Fort Jackson, SC.

Mr. Barnard later went on to teach and coach all sports for five years, four of which where in Blackshear, in the early ‘60's. Mr. Barnard was a member of the Brunswick Lions Club where he had served as president. He had also served as the District Governor of the Lions Club and was president of the Lions Club eye enucleation program.

A very successful businessman, Mr. Barnard started the Shoney's Family Inn Chain in Hinesville and grew the company to 800 employees in four states. The chain consisted of Shoney's motels, restaurants, lounges, Captian D's, Dairy Queens, Holiday Inn Express and Quality Inn.

Mr. Barnard was appointed to the small business leader board during the Carter Administration and also served as District Chairman in the Bo Ginn for Congress campaign & run for governor. He was also the co-chairman of the committee that brought the FLETC to Brunswick.

Mr. Barnard was a deacon at First Baptist Church – Hinesville and was an inactive deacon at First Baptist Church in Brunswick.

He was a son of the late James Pratt, Sr. & Miriam Alma Dixon Barnard.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Dixon Barnard of Brunswick; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernie, Jr. & Kim Barnard of Pooler and Bruce & Angie Barnard of Vidalia; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Thedius Clough of Blackshear and Shug & Lewis Stanfield of Patterson; a brother and sister-in-law, J. P. & Tiny Barnard of Patterson; 5 grandchildren, Brandon Barnard, Ben Barnard, Justin Barnard, Savannah Barnard and Jade Barnard; a great grandchild, Cason Barnard; special friends, Tom Ratcliffe of Hinesville, Lewayne S. Dalton of Waycross, and Bill Hamilton of Brunswick; and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Patterson Cemetery.
