DODGE CITY -- Irene Salsbury, 88, Dodge City, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Salsbury was a retired businesswoman. She and her husband owned and operated a bakery in Garnett. When her husband died in 1935 she continued to run the business by herself. She later worked in day care in Lawrence for many years. She also was a partner in Davis Salsbury Floor Covering in Dodge City and the owner of Marco's Book Store in Dodge City until August 1985. She worked in the officer of her grandson, Dr. Richard Roenfeldt, in Dodge City until 1987.
She was born July 4, 1912, in Clarksville, Ind., the daughter of Louie A. Smart and Edith Cass. She was raised on a farm near Fremont, Ind. She first moved to Garnett in the late 1920s and she had lived in Ottawa, Carthage, Mo., Burlington and Lawrence before she moved to Dodge City in 1951.
Mrs. Salsbury was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dodge City, the Salvation Army Auxiliary, the Woman's Chamber the Dodge City Community Concert Association and the Wednesday Bridge Group.
She married Ralph Roberts, who preceded her in death in 1935. She married Sargent Salsbury in 1936 in Ottawa. He died in January 1983.
Survivors include a son, Barry S. Salsbury, Larkspur, Colo.; a daughter, Joyce Salsbury Day, Dodge City; a sister, Viola Peters, Garnett; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Mrs. Salsbury will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Prairie in Dodge City, to the Salvation Army in Dodge City or to Feed the Children and sent in care of the funeral home.
