AN OLD SETTLER GONE
Jacob Eckroate for many years, a resident of Pleasant Valley township, died at St. Mary's Hospital, Columbus, Tuesday night. Deceased was well-known as one of the old settlers of the County, but for some years has been living in different localities in the hope of benefiting his health. He has been at the hospital for some time, under treatment for a complication of diseases, which finally resulted in his death at the age of 63.
He is buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, in Pleasant Valley township, Dodge County, Nebraska, beside his wife, Barbara and a son Daniel.

Jacob D. Eckroat was born in Mifflin Twp, Columbia County, PA. On his enlistment papers Jacob stated that he was born in Luzerne County, PA in about 1827/8, but it should be noted that at the time of his birth, his father's home was located in Mifflin Twp, Columbia County, PA, on or near the county line between Columbia and Luzerne. Jacob's father and mother belonged to the congregation of Frieden's Union Lutheran and Reformed Church located in Mountain Grove, Black Creek Twp, Luzerne County, PA, in 1826. Jacob then moved to Bethlehem Twp, Stark County, OH, in 1831-1833.
Jacob D. Eckroat married Barbara Klies on 13 June 1853, and the marriage was performed by Reverend A. Campion of St. Clements, Stark County, OH. Jacob was a carpenter by trade; he lived in Bethlehem Twp, Stark County, OH, until 1862 when he and his family moved to Geneseo, Henry County, IL. On 8th Feb 1864, he enlisted in the US Army for 3 years in Chicago, Illinois. In 1869 they moved to Pleasant Valley Twp, Dodge County, NE. By 1874 they had moved to Ridgeley Twp, NE. He purchased lots #1, 2, 3 and 4 of Block 13 in North Bend, NE. He died on 9th December 1890. The court appointed his son-in-law Peter Emmanuel as Administrator to his will. Jacob D. Eckroat and Barbara (born Klies) had seven children: Louis, Daniel E., John Ananias, Mary Ellen, Jacob Victor, Caroline Elizabeth, and Peter Frank.
Jacob's parents were Daniel Eckroat (Eckroth) born of Lynn, Northampton County, PA (Allemangel Gebiet) and Margaret Rebecca (born Eckenroth), known as "Peggy", born 19th April 1793, who later lived in Mifflin Twp, Columbia County. It is noted that Margaret/Rebecca Eckenroth "Peggy" was the daughter of Christian Eckenroth and his second wife, Maria Magdalen born Schlosser, the sister of his 1st wife, Catherine Anna Schlosser.
