Stephan L. Eckroate, married Mary Christina Loew. She was an immigrant from Germany. She related in some way to John Loew the owner of Loew's Confectionery/Pharmacy/Grocery that was located for years in the same block as the present Navarre Deposit Bank. Stephan (also commonly called Louis) and Mary produced a son, William Louis, and three daughters. They were Christina, Irene and Priscilla. After Stephan died Mary married a Peter Saal and this union produced a child, Emma. Peter Saal sold many acres of the Eckroate farm to pay his debts. He gradually sold or signed over bits and pieces of the farm over a span of years, until only about 80 acres remained. He did very little farming. I believe the original Eckroate farm extended westward of the house all the way to the present railroad, north to the present bridge across the Tuscarawas River (north of the old Rockville grade school that is now a privately owned dwelling) and east to the Tuscarawas River. Gerald and Dorothy Adams' farm (owned by Dorothy's father Charles Rohn) was originally part of the Eckroate farm. The use of the Ohio Canal located along the Tuscarawas River was either phasing out or had already ceased as a means of shipping freight at the time of Stephan Eckroate's farming activities. A railroad was built just east of the house between the house and the river, and shipping by rail instead of mule-towed barge was much faster if not cheaper. Later the railroad spur was also removed. All five of the children were born on the Stephan Eckroate farm 3 1/2 miles south of Navarre, but I do not have their birth dates nor dates of death. Irene Eckroate married Jacob Croft but they had no children. They lived in Canton and I believe are buried in the Massillon or Canton cemetery. Priscilla Eckroate married John Fischer and had two daughters, Elnora and Olivia. Olivia married David Spitler and adopted a boy, Edward Larker. Emma Saal married Clarence D. White and had a daughter they named Laverne. Christina Eckroate married Lawrence Heiserer and had sons, William and Clarence, and adopted a girl, Carrie Eckroate. I do not know who Carrie Eckroate was not who her parents were, nor do I know the relationship of Charley Eckroat, Jacob J Eckroate, John Eckroate, Sr., John Eckroate, Jr., Jos. Eckroate, S. Eckroate, or L Eckroate to each other or to my grandfather Stephan. They all lived in the area, including the town of Navarre, and either owned or occupied a residence on the original farm or owned or operated some business in Navarre and resided there. I cannot help but feel that my grandfather Stephan had brothers, or perhaps an uncle or so, as the name Eckroate is too uncommon to believe so many of them would, by chance, collect in one small area and not be related). Charley Eckroate lived in the house next to the present bridge across the Tuscarawas River north of the old Rockville school at the beginning of the stone-quarry road. He lived there many years and I believe he died there sometime in the late teens or early 1920's. Of course, that bridge was not built then - the stone-quarry road was the road to Navarre. The old map shows J. Eckroate, Jr. as the occupant of the Charley Eckroate residence and I cannot explain this inconsistency except that perhaps J. Eckroate's nickname, or maybe his middle name, was Charley or Charley could have been one of the sons of J. Eckroate, Jr. In any case, I do recall the well-house and spring at Charley Eckroate's place. It was famous in the area for its clear ice-cold water that came bubbling out of the base of the stone-quarry hill behind the house.
