Stephan L. Eckroate, married Mary Christina Loew. She was an immigrant from Germany. She related in some way to John Loew the owner of Loew's Confectionery/Pharmacy/Grocery that was located for years in the same block as the present Navarre Deposit Bank. Stephan (also commonly called Louis) and Mary produced a son, William Louis, and three daughters. They were Christina, Irene and Priscilla. After Stephan died Mary married a Peter Saal and this union produced a child, Emma. Peter Saal sold many acres of the Eckroate farm to pay his debts. He gradually sold or signed over bits and pieces of the farm over a span of years, until only about 80 acres remained. He did very little farming. I believe the original Eckroate farm extended westward of the house all the way to the present railroad, north to the present bridge across the Tuscarawas River (north of the old Rockville grade school that is now a privately owned dwelling) and east to the Tuscarawas River. Gerald and Dorothy Adams' farm (owned by Dorothy's father Charles Rohn) was originally part of the Eckroate farm. The use of the Ohio Canal located along the Tuscarawas River was either phasing out or had already ceased as a means of shipping freight at the time of Stephan Eckroate's farming activities. A railroad was built just east of the house between the house and the river, and shipping by rail instead of mule-towed barge was much faster if not cheaper. Later the railroad spur was also removed. All five of the children were born on the Stephan Eckroate farm 3 1/2 miles south of Navarre, but I do not have their birth dates nor dates of death. Irene Eckroate married Jacob Croft but they had no children. They lived in Canton and I believe are buried in the Massillon or Canton cemetery. It was famous in the area for its clear ice-cold water that came bubbling out of the base of the stone-quarry hill behind the house.
