When Abigail was 18 years old, she married a widower named Joshua Sprague, who was 20 years old, in Rhode Island. She then raised his year old daughter as her own. They had their first six children there – Abigail in 1750; Elijah on February 2, 1751; Nancy on October 23, 1753; Meribal on December 17, 1754; William on January 3, 1756; and James in 1761. They had six more children in Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada – Frederick on October 17, 1762; Amy Lina Luna on November 12, 1763, Joshua Jr. about 1765; Jonathan on January 9, 1767; Nehemiah in 1770; and Samuel about 1774. Her last child, Wilbur was born in 1777 in East Hoosac (now Adams) in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
Abigail, who was of the honorable Wilbur family of Rhode Island is described as being rather tall of straight build and having dark hair... and after raising 14 children (giving birth to 13 of them), plus the hardships she went through, she must have been a very strong lady both physically and mentally. She lived to the old age of 95.
Abigail Wilbur Sprague died on December 6, 1825 in Coal Run, Washington County, Ohio and is buried in the Sprague Cemetery across the river from Coal Run, Ohio.
