DWIGHT -- Lura E. Stephens Meece, 90, of 408 E. Philmar St., Dwight, died at 8:43 p.m. Thursday (March 11, 2004) at St. Mary's Hospital, Streator.
Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dwight United Methodist Church, the Rev. William Leppin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Dwight. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. Hager Memorial Home, Dwight, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Dwight United Methodist Church.
She was born Feb. 11, 1914, in Eli, Ky., a daughter of Cornelius and Sarah F. Flanagan Stephens of Russell County, Ky. They preceded her in death. She married Delno G. Meece on Dec. 24, 1933, in Kentucky. He died Jan. 6, 1969.
Surviving are six children, Gail (Stephen) Clapp, Cabery; Lynell (Donald) McGinnis, Dwight; Jack Stephen (Bev) Meece, Kankakee; Janet (Jerry) Joyce, Reddick; Gretta (Robert) Giacometti, Cabery; and Jim Delno (Sandi) Meece, Coal City.
There are 17 grandchildren, John Clapp and Scott (Cindy) Clapp, both of Cabery; Kim McGinnis, Edwardsville; Kevin (Daniela) McGinnis, Glen Carbon; Kent (Margo) McGinnis, Lenexa, Kan.; Karla (Brett) Flaugher, Edwardsville; Kelly (Kevin) Hattendorf, Chandler, Ariz.; Shari (Ron) Fiets, Kankakee; Judy (Dennis) Forneris, Reddick; Lori (Tom) Cullen, Springfield; Patrick (Rita) Joyce, Essex; Karen (Darren) Barker, Kankakee; Suzanne (John) Keating, Odell; Christina (Jerry) Turner, Odell; Tony Giacometti, Greeley, Colo.; Danielle (Corey) Casey, Coal City; and Ryan (Trisha) Meece, Temperance, Mich. There are 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two brothers, Lewis (Jean) Stephens, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; and Arthur (Peggy) Stephens, Orangeburg, S.C.; and one sister, Lacona Coffey, Russell Springs, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delno Meece; one son-in-law, Donald McGinnis; and several brothers and sisters of Russell County, Ky.
She was a member of Dwight United Methodist Church and former member of Quiltmakers of America. Her special interests were cooking and baking pies for her family or church bazaar and quilting. She had made approximately 60 quilts for her family members.
