Sammie Genevra Morris Karr, 90, of Claude, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 3, 2013, in Claude Cemetery, in Claude, with Dr. W. Winfred Moore, pastor emeritus, First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Sammie Genevra Morris Karr was born the youngest of nine children to Samuel Leonidus and Annie Jeanette Harris Morris on March 12, 1923, in Amarillo. Her parents were a founding family of Amarillo and owned a sizeable portion of downtown Amarillo, including their home place on Tyler Street.
Sammie attended Amarillo schools including Amarillo High through the ninth grade. In 1938, her parents moved to their farm in Armstrong County near Claude. Because there was no public school transportation in Armstrong County at that time, Sammie moved to live with a sister in Hansford County and attend Spearman High School where she graduated in 1940.
Following graduation, Sammie enrolled in the residence nursing program at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. She graduated, completed her Registered Nurse exams, and enlisted in the Navy in 1943 to serve as a nurse caring for the men wounded in the Pacific battle theaters of World War II. Her first assignment was at San Diego Naval Base followed by an assignment to the Naval Station in Corvallis, Oregon. She served there until she was honorably discharged in 1946 at the end of the war.
Sammie married Benny Lewis Karr June 1, 1945. The couple ranched in the Texas Panhandle and Western Colorado for their entire marriage of 21 years until Benny died in 1967. Since 1987, Sammie has lived on the family farm near Claude. Benny and Sammie had four children who were her pride and joy.
In 1956, she resumed her nursing career returning to work at Northwest Texas Hospital the first year followed by 12 years at Amarillo Air Force Base, a year at the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo, two years at the Amarillo Texas Tech School of Medicine Campus, and finally as the private office nurse for Dr. Maurice E. Dyer in Amarillo until she retired in 1981.
Sammie's memory will be forever treasured in the hearts of her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Winston Carter, John William "J.W." Morris, Leon Morris, Andrew Jackson "Jack: Morris; and four sisters: Helen Carter King, Annabel Lee Morris Franz, Lucy Jeanette Morris Hartman, and Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Morris Roberts.
Survivors include her children, Constance Sue Karr Surratt and husband Steven of Warner Robins, Georgia, Benjamin Barton Karr and wife Linda and Annie Jeanette Karr Carroll and husband Cornel, all of Claude, and Eva Nell Karr Stephenson of Amarillo.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675; or Paralyzed Veterans of America, Donation Processing Center, PO Box 758532, Topeka, KS 66675-8532.
