Syracuse (NY) Post-Standard: Thursday July 9, 1959

Mrs. Harriet M. Merritt, 80 of 204 Forest Ave, became the first pedestrian fatality of the year yesterday when she died of injuries suffered when struck by a car on Midland avenue near Forest avenue.

Mrs. Merritt suffered a skull fracture and fractures of her arms and left leg and died in Onondaga General Hospital about 11:30 am.

Patrolmen Joseph Giacobbe and James Wheeler reported the woman was tossed about 30 feet when struck by a car operated by Mrs. Erma Manti of 148 Furman St.

Mrs. Manti was southbound on Midland avenue about 9:30 a.m. when the pedestrian suddenly appeared in front of her car, she told police. She said she was unable to avoid the elderly woman. No tickets were issued.

Mrs. Merritt is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard Plaisted, a son Blanchard Wilson, two sisters, Miss Margaret Good of Syracuse and Mrs. Verna Harlan of Williamsport, PA; a brother Harold Good of Williamsport, PA, a granddaughter and a niece and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Frasier Funeral Home, 1217 N Salina St, with the Rev Paul Joslyn officiating. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
