Frank Liebel

Frank Liebel was born on May 1, 1922 in Bodfish and entered into rest on Aug. 24, 2003 in Bakersfield.

Frank is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virgil; seven children-- Dane Liebel of Naples, Maine, Bernie Liebel of Grants, N.M., Marvis Liebel of Brighton, Colo., Eddie Liebel of Pine Hill, N.M.,Terry Liebel of Pine Mountain Club, Calif., Rodena Mannatt of Tehachapi, Calif. and Randy Liebel of Tehachapi; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Caroline Houser of Onyx and Margaret Brassfield of Oildale.

A Kern Valley native, Frank lived here all of his life. He worked at many jobs. In his younger years he worked at a clerk at the Onyx Store; for the Forest Service; at local ranches; for the Edison Company; for the Army Corps of Engineers; and as a stunt rider in Hopalong Cassidy western movies.

After marrying Virgil, the love of his life, they moved to the family ranch where he discovered tungsten and uranium that he mined for a number of years. Following those years, he built up a modest herd of cattle. He also owned and operated Liebel Excavation until his retirement in 1970.

He was an avid hunter, prospector and antique collector.

Frank was proud of his Native American heritage and was a direct descendant of the Tillie Creek Massacre. He was a cowboy at heart and lived his life in the Old West style. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Visitation was Aug. 28, 2003 at the Rose Chapel of Lake Isabella Valley Mortuary with graveside services following at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.
