Born in Grasheim, Karlshuld bei Neuberg, Bavaria, son of Ignatz and Seraphina (Winnegger) Ebenhoch. He immigrated to the U.S. on 2 June 1890 with two of his sisters on the ship Waesland. He was a young harness maker, and wanted to see some of the world, planning to return home after some time in America. His father sold a cow to pay for his passage. He married 17 Nov. 1896 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Akron to Carolina Schaaf, and remained in the states. He and his wife eventually separated. Eleven children, six lived to adulthood.
