News was received here Thursday of the death of Calvin J. Sutherland, well-known Galax citizen for many years, which occurred in a Wytheville rest home Wednesday afternoon, June 29, 1960.
Mr. Sutherland, who had been a member of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department for many years, had been in ill health for a lengthy period of time.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Louise Rector, Galax, two brothers, Johnson Z. Sutherland, Elk Creek, and Chap M. Sutherland, Comers Rock, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Shuler and Mrs. Ruth Taylor, both of Comers Rock.
Born at Comers Rock, Grayson County, October 29, 1877, Mr. Sutherland was a son of the late Alex M. Sutherland and wife, Mrs. Eliza Comer Sutherland.
Funeral services were held at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel Friday (July 1) at 2 p.m. by Dr. Mark M. Moore, pastor of the First Methodist Church, and the Rev. Otto Utt, pastor of the First Bible Brethren Church.
Interment was in the Reeves Cemetery near Independence.
Members of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department served as honorary pallbearers and members of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Galax Volunteer Fire Department were flower bearers.
