He was born April 23, 1888 in Forsyth County. He was the son of Henry Clay Overby and Elmina Nancy "Minnie" Crow Overby, both of Georgia. He had seven siblings: Idora "Dora" Azalee Overby (Hemphill) 1870-1964, Joseph Willis Overby 1872-1966, William Daniel Overby 1873-1940, James W. Overby (1878-?), Norman Bartow Overby 1885-1971, Charles A. Overby 1885-1966, and Luthur Hugh Overby 1890-1972.
He married Minnie Jones Overby in 1903 at the age of 15 and to their union they had 15 children: Nila, Addie Velma, Charles Henry, Nancy R. "Lessie,",Collie Luther "Bill, " Dorothy L, Hortense, Howard Wadley, Clinton Overby, Jr., Florence B., Allen H., Tot, the twins Mildred and Dimples, Edsel, and Baby Overby.
He lived most of his life in North Georgia. For a few years, he and his family lived in Amboy, Turner County, Georgia as evident of the 1930 Census but then moved back to Gainesville, Georgia. He was a shop worker for the Hall County Highway Department. His old address of 618 Oak Street is currently a vacant lot (as of 2013).
He died of gastric cancer and is buried in the old portion of Hillcrest Cemetery, known as Buford Cemetery. He is buried beside his wife Minnie. Also in the plot is his small children Tot, Edsel, and Baby Overby.
